RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Tomas Holmstrom helped Ty Conklin get off to a good start with the Detroit Red Wings.
Holmstrom scored the go-ahead goal in the second period while Conklin finished with 27 saves in his debut to help the Red Wings beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 on Monday night, giving Detroit its second road win in two tries this season.

WASHINGTON – Washington Capitals goalie Brent Johnson let the Vancouver Canucks’ first shot into his net and finished with only nine saves. The Capitals’ offensive star, reigning league scoring champion Alex Ovechkin, was held without a point.

PHILADELPHIA – Scottie Upshall wanted to knock down the flying puck and clear some room in front of Philadelphia’s net.

The Flyers forward did use his stick and deflect Michael Komisarek’s shot – only the puck fell right into the net for Montreal’s go-ahead goal.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Thomas Vanek scored twice and Ales Kotalik and Jason Pominville each added a goal and two assists as the Buffalo Sabres beat the New York Islanders 7-1 on Monday afternoon.

The Philadelphia Flyers have named Bill Barber as a scouting consultant.
 
Barber, 56, had spent the previous six seasons (2002-03 through 2007-08) as director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Lightning, including their Stanley Cup Championship season in 2003-04.

MOSCOW – Alexei Cherepanov, a former first-round draft pick of the NHL’s New York Rangers, died Monday during a game in Russia. He was 19.The six-foot-one, 187-pound Cherepanov reportedly collapsed on the bench of his Avangard Omsk team in the third period of a Continental Hockey League game and died a short time later.

TORONTO – Andy McDonald and Brad Boyes scored in a shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 5-4 comeback win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday afternoon.

The Boston Bruins shipped defenseman Andrew Alberts to Philadelphia Monday, in exchange for 22-year-old left winger Ned Lukacevic and a fourth-round pick in the 2009 entry draft.
