GLENDALE, Ariz. – Phoenix Coyotes defenceman Kurt Sauer is expected to be sidelined at least four weeks because of a lower-body injury.Sauer was hurt Saturday night in Phoenix’s victory over Dallas.

CALGARY – Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman, co-owner of the Calgary Flames and part of the original group that brought the team over from Atlanta, died Sunday at age 86.

CALGARY – The next stop on Mikael Backlund’s whirlwind journey will be the Western Hockey League.The Calgary Flames assigned the Swedish prospect to the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets on Sunday.

EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers placed tough guy Zach Stortini on injured reserve Sunday and recalled Ryan Potulny from Springfield of the American Hockey League.

LOS ANGELES – Brian Rolston, Travis Zajac and Patrik Elias put the pop back in the New Jersey Devils’ power play.Each scored with the man-advantage to help the Devils beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-1 Saturday night.

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Patrick Marleau scored two third-period goals Saturday to give gave the San Jose Sharks a 4-2 victory over the slumping Vancouver Canucks and their second straight NHL road win.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Familiarity led to improvisation for Phoenix Coyotes rookie Kyle Turris.Turris scored in the fifth round of the shootout and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Dallas Stars 1-0 Saturday night.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – David Legwand is a natural centre, but has made the most of his move to the left side.Legwand scored the first and last goals of the game for the Nashville Predators on Saturday night in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Evan Brophey’s first period goal held up as the game winner, and the Rockford Icehogs beat the Toronto Marlies 1-0 in AHL action Saturday.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Alexandre Bolduc scored in shootout and in regulation to lift the Manitoba Moose to a 2-1 victory over the Iowa Chops on Saturday in the AHL.

CLEVELAND – Brock Trotter scored a goal and an assist as Hamilton defeated the Lake Erie Monsters 4-3 on Saturday in AHL action, extending the Bulldog’s win streak to three.

OTTAWA – No one expected Brian Elliott to be Henrik Lundqvist, but it might have helped the Ottawa Senators if he was.Lundqvist made 33 saves as the Senators fell 2-0 to the New York Rangers on Saturday, and his shutout spoiled the debut of Elliott who was making just his second start in the NHL and first this year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nikita Filatov became the first Columbus rookie to score three goals in a game, helping the Blue Jackets beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 on Saturday night.

PHILADELPHIA – Jeff Carter scored twice in the third period to take the NHL lead with 29 goals and lifted the Philadelphia Flyers to their season-high eighth straight home win, 4-1 over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

MONTREAL – Sergei Kostitsyn scored with 22 seconds left in regulation time to give the Montreal Canadiens a 5-4 victory over the Washington Capitals in a see-saw NHL battle on Saturday night.

DETROIT – Mikael Samuelsson scored the go-ahead goal with 2:34 left in the third period as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 Saturday night.

BOSTON – Boston Bruins forward Marco Sturm could miss the rest of the season because of a left knee injury.Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Sturm will undergo left knee surgery on Tuesday to repair meniscus and possibly the anterior cruciate ligament.
